Why nose filler needs dissolving
- A widened bridge. Filler that has spread sideways over years makes the nose appear broad and flat.
- Migration. Filler that has moved from where it was placed, a late complication of HA that can be confirmed on ultrasound.
- A lump or overfilled area. Too much filler in one place, or filler placed too superficially.
- A new bump. In rare cases old filler organises into a firm capsule and forms a bump years later.
- An emergency. Pale or dusky skin after injection, a sign of a blocked vessel that is treated at once.
Why repeated nose filler widens the bridge
HA breaks down slowly in the nose, and imaging studies show that much of it can remain for years. When a top-up is placed on filler that is still present, the total volume increases with each session. The tight skin of the bridge limits upward projection, and the added filler therefore spreads sideways. Injection techniques have been designed specifically to prevent long-term nasal widening. The change is gradual and often goes unnoticed until earlier and recent photographs are compared.
How nose filler is dissolved
Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks down HA. It is injected at several small points along the bridge, into the area where the filler sits. Most of the filler softens within 24 to 48 hours. A second session is sometimes required for filler that has been present for years or has formed a capsule, as the capsule limits the spread of the enzyme. The swelling from the injection settles over a few days.
Treatment of a blocked vessel follows a different protocol, in which high doses of hyaluronidase are given across the whole affected area and repeated at intervals until the skin colour returns. My practice has its own hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) chamber on site, which can raise the oxygen supply to the affected skin while blood flow is restored.
Nose fillers that cannot be dissolved
- Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite). It is broken down by the body over time, as described on Radiesse nose filler.
- PCL and PLLA fillers. These are also broken down by the body over time.
- Mixtures. Where HA was mixed with another product, only the HA component dissolves.
Where the product injected is unknown, any record of the product name helps to determine whether dissolving is possible.
Refilling after dissolving nose filler
I wait at least two weeks after dissolving before placing new filler, which allows the swelling to settle and the true shape to be assessed. The new filler is placed deep on the bone in the midline, in a smaller amount than before, and most patients require less than they had originally.

Does dissolving nose filler hurt?
Dissolving nose filler stings briefly, similar to the original injection, and the nose is sore for a day or two.
How long does it take for nose filler to dissolve?
Most HA softens within 24 to 48 hours. Old or encapsulated filler may require a second session.
Will dissolving filler damage my nose?
Dissolving is unlikely to damage the nose. Hyaluronidase breaks down the filler along with some of the natural HA of the skin, which the body replaces within days.
Can I get new filler the same day?
New filler is not placed on the same day. I wait at least two weeks, so the new filler is placed on a settled nose.
