What Is AGNES RF?

AGNES RF is a treatment designed to target the sebaceous glands, which produce the oil (sebum) that contributes to acne. It uses micro-insulated needles to deliver radiofrequency (RF) energy directly into these glands, aiming to reduce their activity and address acne at its source.

Unlike traditional treatments involving topical or oral medications, AGNES RF offers a more targeted approach. By focusing on the sebaceous glands, it minimises the risk of affecting surrounding tissues, leading to a shorter recovery period compared to more invasive methods.

Dr Gerard Ee provides AGNES RF treatment as part of a personalised approach to managing acne and acne scars in Singapore.

Common Acne Breakouts

Acne presents in diverse ways, from mild forms like blackheads and whiteheads to more severe conditions such as pustules and painful cystic acne. These breakouts can be triggered by several factors, including hormonal changes, excess oil production, and bacteria.

The AGNES RF treatment is designed to address a wide spectrum of these acne breakouts, including cystic, inflammatory, comedonal, pustules, and hormonal acne. This makes it a versatile option in Singapore for individuals grappling with persistent acne issues. By targeting the root cause of these various conditions, it offers a precise approach for different skin types and acne manifestations.

Is AGNES Suitable for Me?

AGNES is a targeted treatment for managing acne. It may be suitable for:

Enlarged Pores

For pores that are frequently clogged with dead skin cells, oil, and impurities, leading to inflammation and acne development.

Persistent Acne

For acne or pimples that consistently reappear in the same spots.

Eye Bags

For those seeking to reduce under-eye bags and tighten skin by targeting fat pockets and stimulating collagen production.

Sensitive Skin

As an option for individuals with sensitive skin who may not tolerate stronger acne medications like isotretinoin.

How Does AGNES Acne Treatment Work?

AGNES acne treatment uses micro-insulated needles to deliver targeted radiofrequency (RF) energy directly into sebaceous glands, the oil-producing structures in the skin that contribute to acne. The RF energy heats the glands to a specific temperature, causing controlled damage (coagulative necrosis) that permanently destroys the overactive sebaceous glands.

By eliminating these glands, AGNES reduces excess oil and sebum production — two key contributors to acne formation. This process leads to a permanent reduction of acne in treated areas, making it particularly effective for those with cystic, nodular, or recurrent acne.

Scientific studies support the efficacy of AGNES RF. Lee et al. (2012) demonstrated that selective sebaceous gland electrothermolysis significantly reduced acne lesions with minimal side effects. Ryu et al. (2019) further validated the AGNES RF’s success in addressing severe acne, showing notable improvements in acne severity. Ahn et al. (2020) found that AGNES RF not only reduced active acne but also improved acne scars, highlighting its effectiveness for multiple acne-related concerns.

The precision of AGNES RF allows it to target the root cause of acne without affecting surrounding tissues or relying on ongoing medications, providing a long-term solution for acne management.

What to Expect During the AGNES RF Laser Treatment

Before your AGNES RF treatment, you’ll have a consultation with Dr Gerard to assess your skin and determine if it’s the right option for you. The procedure is a multi-step process:

  • Numbing: A topical anaesthetic cream is applied for 20-30 minutes to minimise discomfort.
  • Preparation: Your skin is cleansed and prepped, with a full-face drainage and extraction.
  • Treatment: Dr Gerard carefully inserts a micro-needle into the sebaceous glands to deliver monopolar radiofrequency (RF) energy, which targets and destroys the problematic glands.
  • Post-Care: The following day, a bipolar RF current is applied with a surface probe to help loosen and remove any remaining debris, aiding the healing process.

After the treatment, you may experience mild and temporary side effects, such as redness and swelling. The procedure has minimal downtime, allowing most patients to quickly return to their normal activities.

Frequently Asked Questions About AGNES RF

AGNES is a safe treatment that minimises damage to the surrounding skin. Once the sebaceous glands are destroyed, acne is less likely to recur. Studies have shown that less than 10% of acne cases returned within a year after the final treatment.

The downtime is minimal. Mild redness and dryness can be expected, usually subsiding within 1-3 days. These effects can be concealed with foundation or tinted moisturiser.

Each treatment session lasts between 30 and 60 minutes.

The number of AGNES sessions required depends on the severity of the acne and each individual’s response to treatment. Typically, a course of treatment includes up to three sessions. The first session targets the sebaceous glands, the second (usually the following day) removes dead cells from the pores, and a third session helps clear any remaining debris and impurities. The exact number of sessions may vary based on individual needs and treatment progress.

Each AGNES RF treatment session ranges from SGD$800* for a partial face treatment to SGD$1,500* for a full face treatment.

Results from AGNES vary depending on the individual. Some may see improvement after a single treatment, while others may require additional sessions. Typically, 2 to 3 treatments are recommended for noticeable improvement. These treatments can be repeated 3 to 6 months after the initial session.

AGNES RF can be suitable for a range of skin types. However, it’s important to consult with Dr Gerard for a personalised assessment to determine if this acne treatment in Singapore is the right option for your specific skin condition and needs.
