Infini is an RF microneedling option I provide at The Clifford Clinic. I often consider its insulated-needle approach when deeper remodelling of settled acne scars is the priority, particularly in skin that pigments readily.

That preference does not make Infini suitable for every scar or every patient. The assessment considers scar type, skin condition, previous treatment and whether another method needs to be included.
Which acne scars Infini RF microneedling treats
Infini is the RF device selected when the problem is depth. It suits rolling scars once their tether has been released by subcision, boxcar scars with a defined floor, and broad textural scarring across the cheeks. It is not the first choice for an ice pick scar, which is treated with TCA CROSS, nor for a flat red or brown mark, which is not a scar and is treated with V Beam or Q-Switch. Where a rolling scar is still tethered, subcision is performed first and Infini follows in the same session or the next, because energy delivered into a scar that is still held down remodels collagen around the tether rather than lifting the floor.
How I assess scars before recommending Infini
I distinguish broad depressions and textural changes from narrow pits, tethered scars and flat marks. Active acne is assessed separately because new inflammation can continue to produce new marks or scars.
Where a scar remains tethered, releasing it may be important. Where a pit is narrow and deep, a focal treatment may be more useful than simply adding broader RF sessions. The acne scar guide sets out the different approaches.
RF is sometimes considered for other skin-quality goals, but the same course should not be promised to treat scars, pigmentation and significant laxity equally. We agree on the concern being treated and how its response will be assessed.
Infini, Secret RF or a laser?
I provide Infini and Secret RF. When deciding between them for acne scars, I consider needle configuration, the treatment goal, skin response and tolerability. My Infini vs Secret RF comparison for acne scars explains how those considerations inform the choice.
A laser may have a different role in scar resurfacing. Neither the greatest stated needle depth nor a higher maximum generator output proves that a procedure is better. A useful comparison considers clinical outcomes, adverse effects and the patient’s actual scar pattern.

What the treatment involves
Before treatment, we discuss the area, likely course, alternatives, recovery and cost. Tell me about medicines, recent procedures and any history of abnormal scarring or pigment changes. Current or recent isotretinoin use needs to be included in that discussion.
Skin preparation and topical anaesthetic are followed by treatment of the planned area. The depth and settings can vary across the face. A treatment appointment also needs time for preparation and aftercare. The time under the handpiece is only part of the visit.
Aftercare is tailored to the procedure. Follow the instructions for gentle cleansing, moisturising, sun protection and restarting active skincare, and avoid picking or scrubbing temporary roughness.
Sessions, recovery and results
I commonly discuss three to five Infini sessions around four to six weeks apart. The number and spacing depend on healing, the treatment goal and the response. A further session should have a clear purpose.
Redness, swelling, tenderness and temporary surface changes can follow treatment. Recovery is not identical for every area or setting, and it may take longer than expected in an individual patient.
Remodelling is gradual. We compare the skin over the agreed follow-up period rather than judge the final result from early swelling. A course can improve selected concerns but cannot guarantee complete scar removal or a permanent result.
Infini RF after subcision and alongside fractional CO2
A tethered rolling scar does not lift with Infini alone. The band beneath it has to be cut first, and Infini then rebuilds collagen across the released floor. Fractional CO2 performs the same remodelling through the skin surface rather than through needles, with more visible downtime and a higher risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation in darker skin. Infini is therefore often the choice in Fitzpatrick skin types IV and V, and CO2 in lighter skin or on smaller areas. In a six-month plan the two are used in different months, not on the same day, so that each treated layer has healed before the next controlled injury is made. Risks and when treatment needs to wait
Possible complications include burns, pigment change, infection and scarring. Reports involving RF microneedling also include fat loss and nerve injury with certain uses. [2]
Active infection, an uncontrolled skin flare, poor healing or other medical factors may change the timing or suitability. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, implants and relevant medicines require a specific assessment.
Contact the clinic if pain worsens, blisters develop, redness spreads, discharge appears, or sensation or facial contour changes unexpectedly. A concerning reaction should be reviewed before considering further treatment.

Is Infini better than Secret RF for acne scars?
Neither is better for every scar. Infini’s insulated needles suit deeper remodelling and skin that pigments readily, whereas Secret RF suits texture, pores and patients whose acne is not yet fully settled. The choice is made at the consultation, on scar type and skin type.
Does Infini hurt?
Topical anaesthetic is applied before treatment. Most patients describe heat and pressure rather than sharp pain.
Can Infini be done with active acne?
Active acne is settled first, because each new inflamed lesion can produce a new scar while the old ones are being treated.
How soon after isotretinoin can Infini be done?
Current or recent isotretinoin use is discussed at the consultation and the timing is set individually.

How Infini RF microneedling works
Infini RF microneedling delivers radiofrequency heat through insulated needles to remodel rolling and boxcar acne scars from below the surface. A course is usually three to five sessions, four to six weeks apart, and it is often chosen for Fitzpatrick skin types IV to V. Rolling scars usually need subcision first.
Fine insulated needles deliver RF energy at the exposed portion of the needle, creating local heating at the selected depth. The treatment aims to stimulate a gradual repair and remodelling response.
Depth and energy are adjusted for the area and goal. Insulation helps shape energy delivery. It does not mean the epidermis cannot be injured or that pigmentation and scarring are impossible. The general RF microneedling guide explains the category and its risks.
Infini in darker skin
I often favour an insulated approach in suitable scar patients who pigment readily. I still assess previous pigment reactions, current inflammation and the thickness and condition of the treatment area.
Published RF research in darker skin reports useful outcomes alongside pigment changes and limitations in study quality. [1] This supports careful selection and counselling, not a promise that insulated treatment carries no risk.
